Manns Harbor Fishing Village: A Tribute to Old Croatan is an expansive historical account of Manns Harbor, formerly named Croatan, and features more than two hundred historic and contemporary photographs of the fishing village and surrounding areas. Melvin Twiddy’s stories provide particular insight into the village’s fishing and crabbing industries. Although his book is based on historical facts, it is largely interspersed with colorful tales, including a few of his own.
“The village of Manns Harbor is
fortunate to have Melvin Twiddy record their history. He is a good listener and
storyteller.”
– David Perry, Editor-in-Chief,
University of North Carolina Press
“Too often, the stories of places like Manns Harbor and their people slip away, either scribbled down haphazardly and lost or never recorded in the first place. So it’s a blessing for us all, whether we’re lucky enough to live where North Carolina meets the sea, or just great admirers of that remarkable place, to hold a book like Melvin’s in our hands. His stories are a source of wonder, and they deserve our attention.”
– Kent Priestley, co-author of North Carolina Curiosities and former journalist with
The Coastland Times
